Getting started with your Smart SIM (Android)

Got a new Smart SIM? Follow the steps to set this up on your Android device

Before you begin πŸ“

Your Smart SIM lets you stay connected when you're in the UK or abroad. You'll need:

  • The Smart SIM email with your QR code

  • The Honest app installed on your phone

  • A few minutes to complete the setup


Installing your Smart SIM πŸ“²

This adds your Honest Smart SIM to your phone so you can start using it.

  1. Open the Smart SIM email you received

  2. Find the QR code and scan the QR code with your phone

Enabling data roaming

This makes sure your Smart SIM works properly and is connected when you’re in the UK or abroad.

  1. Open Settings

  2. Tap Network & Internet or Connections

  3. Tap SIMs or Mobile network

  4. Select your Smart SIM

  5. Turn on Data Roaming

Updating the APN

This makes sure your Smart SIM connects to use data services.

  1. Open Settings

  2. Tap Network & Internet or Connections

  3. Tap SIMs or Mobile network

  4. Select your Smart SIM

  5. Tap Access point names

  6. Select the '+' in the top right

  7. For Name, put in 'Smart SIM'

  8. For APN put in 'data00.telnyx'

  9. Leave the rest blank and tap Save

  10. Ensure this APN is selected

Switching to Smart SIM

Switch to Smart SIM in just a few taps.

Switch to Smart SIM on Samsung

1. Swipe down from the top of your screen twice and open Quick Settings
2. Tap Mobile Data
3. Switch your data line to Smart SIM

Follow the same steps to switch data back to your main SIM.

Switch to Smart SIM on Google Pixel

1. Go to Settings and tap Network and Internet
2. Tap SIMs
3. Scroll down, tap Mobile Data and switch to your Smart SIM

Follow the same steps to switch data back to your main SIM.

Switch to Smart SIM on another Android device

1. Open Settings
2. Go to Connections or Network and Internet
3. Select Mobile Data and switch your data line to your Smart SIM

Follow the same instructions to switch data back to your main SIM.

Configuring data switching

We recommend also setting up automatic data switching. This means in the moments you can't manually switch to Smart SIM and your main SIM has completely lost signal, Smart SIM will kick in.

  1. Open Settings

  2. Tap Cellular or Mobile Data

  3. Tap Cellular Data

  4. Select your main SIM (not the Smart SIM)

  5. Turn on Allow Cellular Data Switching

Configuring data switching

This makes sure your main SIM handles mobile data, and your Smart SIM can step in when needed.

  1. Open Settings

  2. Tap Network & Internet

  3. Tap SIMs or Mobile network

  4. Under Mobile data, select your main SIM (not the Smart SIM)

  5. Turn on Mobile data switching (wording may vary by phone)

Making sure VPNs are off

VPNs will block your Smart SIM connection, so it's best to turn them off.

  1. Open Settings

  2. Tap Network & Internet

  3. Tap VPN

  4. Turn off any active VPN

Turning off Private DNS

Some DNS settings can interfere with your Smart SIM. Turning it off helps avoid issues.

  1. Open Settings

  2. Tap Network & Internet

  3. Tap Private DNS

  4. Select Off

Testing your Smart SIM βœ…

Once your device is set up, check your Smart SIM connection using the Smart SIM test in the Honest app. It only takes a few seconds and will confirm if your Smart SIM is working as it should.

Using the in-app test πŸ“²

  1. Once logged into the app. Tap on the SIMs tab from the bottom menu

  2. Tap on your Smart SIM

  3. Scroll down and tap on Test your Smart SIM

  4. Go through each step and complete each task so you see a βœ…

    1. Turning off any VPNs

    2. Turning off any WiFi connections

    3. Ensure you're connected to the Smart SIM

  5. When all βœ… are complete, tap on the Test your Smart SIM button

Once complete, your Smart SIM should be working

Using the backup test page

  1. 1.Turn off all other SIMs except your Smart SIM on your device.

  2. Disable Wi-Fi and any other SIMs so only the Smart SIM’s mobile data is active.

  3. Open a browser and go to https://smartsim.honestmobile.com.

  4. Look for a βœ… or ❌ indicator.

Changing networks

Smart SIM will connect to the network with the best coverage and stick to it until it drops. Follow these steps if you'd like to choose a different network:

  1. Open Settings

  2. Tap Network & Internet or Connections

  3. Tap SIMs or Mobile Network

  4. Select your Smart SIM

  5. Turn off Automatic Selection

  6. Wait for the list of available networks to load (this can take up to 2-3 minutes)

  7. Tap the network you want to connect to.

This can be handy for testing another local network in your area or if your usual connection isn’t working well. The UK supports connections on EE, O2, Three and Vodafone.

Moving your Smart SIM to a new phone

Got a new phone you want to move the Smart SIM to? No problem.

  1. Uninstall the Smart SIM from your old phone

  2. Find the initial email we sent you with your Smart SIM QR code.

  3. Scan the QR Code to activate the smart SIM on your new phone

  4. The Smart SIM will then be added to your new phone

  5. Follow the on-screen instructions to complete the setup.

If you no longer have access to the initial email with the QR code or manual install details, you can request a replacement within the app.

Just select the Smart SIM and then choose Change Device.



Basic troubleshooting πŸ”§

If something’s not working, try these quick fixes first.

  1. Check that Mobile Data is on

  2. Check that Data Roaming is on

  3. Check you've updated your APN

  4. Check that Private DNS is off

  5. Check that any VPNs are off

  6. Restart your phone.
